Good New Year wishes for colleagues are short and specific: thank people for the year, mention one thing that actually happened in it, and wish them a good 2027. "Happy New Year, everyone. Thank you for getting the new billing system live in November. It was the hardest thing we did all year, and it held. Here's to 2027." That is the whole formula. What changes is the reader and the channel, so the examples below are grouped that way: one colleague, your team, the whole company, clients and the team chat.
The 1 January New Year is also the easiest greeting of the season for a mixed workplace. It isn't tied to anyone's religion and it is on everyone's calendar, which makes it a natural moment to thank people for the year. If you want to greet colleagues for their own holidays too, our guide to holiday greetings by tradition covers the names and the timing.
Short New Year wishes for colleagues
For most colleagues one or two lines are right, whether it goes in a card, a direct message or the end of an email. These work as they are, and better with one detail of your own added.
- "Happy New Year! Thanks for being so easy to work with this year. See you in January."
- "Happy New Year, Priya. The report would still be in draft without you. Have a great 2027."
- "Wishing you a restful break and a good start to 2027. Thanks for all the help this year."
- "Happy New Year from Lisbon! Thanks for every late call you joined so I didn't have to join an early one."
- "Happy New Year, Tom. Thanks for a year of good advice and terrible puns, in roughly equal measure."
- To your manager: "Happy New Year, and thank you for the clear priorities and the honest feedback this year. Both made a difference."
The same idea works for birthdays through the year; our birthday messages for coworkers are grouped by how well you know the person.
New Year message to your team from a manager
A New Year message to the team from a manager works when it thanks people for something they would recognize. "Thank you for your hard work and dedication" arrives from every manager in December, and nobody remembers who sent it. "Thank you for closing the year on time with half the team out in November" gets remembered, because only the manager of that team could have written it. Pick one thing from 2026, put it in a sentence, and add a short wish.
A few sentences are enough for the team channel, a short paragraph for email. Money and forecasts stay out of it: no bonus hints, no "2027 will be calmer". What a manager writes in a New Year message tends to come back in the next salary conversation.
- "Team, thank you for 2026. We shipped the new checkout two weeks early and nobody had to work a weekend to do it. That is a first, and it is yours. Happy New Year, and see you on the 4th."
- "Before everyone logs off: this was the year we went from three clients to eleven, and every one of them came through work you did. Thank you. Enjoy the break, and Happy New Year."
- "Happy New Year to the best support team I've worked with. You answered more tickets than ever this year and the satisfaction score still went up. I don't take that for granted."
- "To the warehouse crew: December was our biggest month ever and every order went out on time. Thank you. Enjoy the break, and Happy New Year."
- "Thank you for a year of steady work through a lot of change. Three reorganizations, and we still hit the launch date. Happy New Year. I'm glad I get to start 2027 with this team."

We made this card in the app, and the people in it are fictional. You can upload a photo of your own team, turn it into a photo card with your message on it and send it to everyone by link or email. Photo cards are paid in credits, and the price is on the button before you press it.
Year-end thank-you notes that name one real achievement
A year-end thank-you note is only as good as the thing it names. Three parts are enough: what happened, who made it happen and what it made possible. "Thanks for all your hard work" has none of them. "Thanks for rebuilding the onboarding flow. New customers stopped emailing us for help in their first week" has all three, and the person reading it knows you noticed.
One check before you send: could this sentence go to any other team at any other company? If it could, it needs a real detail. These notes work best as a separate message from the general New Year greeting, sent to one person or a small group, so they don't get lost among the wishes.
- "Maria, thank you for taking over the vendor contracts in March. Renewals used to be a scramble every quarter, and this year there wasn't one. Happy New Year."
- "Thank you, Sam, for the data migration. Eight years of customer records moved over a single weekend and nobody outside the team noticed. That's the best compliment a migration can get."
- "To the events team: the September conference sold out and came in under budget. Thank you for making it look easy. Here's to 2027."
- "Jess, thank you for mentoring the two new hires this year. Both of them are running their own projects now, and that's largely down to you. Happy New Year."
- "Thank you to everyone who covered the help desk over the summer when we were short-staffed. Response times held steady the whole time. Have a great New Year, all of you."
Happy New Year message to employees from the company
A company-wide New Year message goes to everyone at once, so it has to read well on a phone: a clear subject line, three short paragraphs and a real name at the bottom rather than "The Management". Send it on the last working day before the break or on the first morning back; for 2027 that is often Thursday 31 December or Monday 4 January. Use a distribution list or put recipients in BCC, or someone will reply "Thanks, you too!" to 400 people.
"Subject: Thank you for 2026
Hi everyone,
Before we close the year, I want to say thank you. This year we doubled the support team, rebuilt the app from the ground up and kept every client we started the year with. None of that happens unless people do more than their job description asks, and many of you did.
There is a lot ahead in 2027, and I'm glad we'll be doing it together.
Happy New Year to you and your families,
Laura
Two shorter versions:
- For a small company: "Hi all, thank you for a busy year and for everything you put into it. Have a proper rest, and Happy New Year. See you on the 4th. Dan"
- For a team spread across countries: "Happy New Year to everyone, in every time zone. Thank you for making 2026 work across four offices and a lot of video calls. Wishing you a good start to 2027."
New Year wishes for clients
New Year wishes for clients work best as a short note from one person to another. One line about the work you did together turns a greeting into a message. Leave out discount codes and "let's set up a call in January": if there is an offer, send it separately. If your clients close for the holiday season, send by mid-December; otherwise the last week of December or the first week of January both work.
- "Dear Karen, thank you for trusting us with the rebrand this year. Seeing it on your storefronts in October was a highlight for our whole team. Happy New Year, and we look forward to 2027."
- "Happy New Year from all of us at Brightline. Thank you for your business and your feedback this year. Several of the changes we made in 2026 started as your suggestions."
- "Wishing you a successful 2027. It has been a pleasure working with you and your team, and we're looking forward to what comes next."
- For a supplier: "Thank you for another year of on-time deliveries, including the rush order in November that saved our launch. Happy New Year to everyone at Northside."
- For a long client list, where one personal line isn't possible: "Thank you for working with us in 2026. Wishing you a healthy and happy New Year."
Lines for the team chat
In a team chat, one line is plenty and an emoji is fine. Post in the morning of 31 December or on the first day back, not at midnight: a message in a big channel at 12 a.m. buzzes everyone's phone, including people who went to bed. And if someone has already posted "Happy New Year everyone!", a reply with one detail does more than another 🎉.
- "Happy New Year, team! Thanks for 2026. See you Monday 🥂"
- "Last message of 2026 from me: thank you all. It was a good year to work here."
- "Happy New Year! Out-of-office on, laptop closed, see you in 2027."
- "Big thanks to everyone who kept things running this week. Happy New Year, and enjoy the break 🎉"
- "Here's to a 2027 with fewer meetings and the same great people."
- "Happy New Year! Thanks for being the kind of team where asking a question never felt like a bother."
What to leave out
Each of these lines sounds friendly when you type it and reads differently in someone's inbox a week later.
| Leave out | Why it backfires | Write instead |
|---|---|---|
| "Big bonuses coming in 2027!" | Even as a joke, people remember it and bring it up at review time. | Nothing about money. A decided bonus gets its own announcement, with numbers. |
| "No more crunch next year." | Nobody can promise that, and it gets quoted back to you in March. | A wish: "Here's to a calmer 2027." |
| "You're not a team, you're a family." | From a CEO to 300 people it reads as awkward at best. | Thanks for something the team actually did. |
| Jokes about diets, the gym or drinking less | They can land badly with someone who is dealing with exactly that. | Humor about work. |
| Three people thanked by name in a team-wide message | The fourth person notices. | Thank teams or projects in the group, and send personal thanks one to one. |
| Imagery tied to one religious holiday | Not everyone on a mixed team shares it. | Neutral images: the team itself, a toast, the year's numbers on a whiteboard. |
New Year at work: questions people ask
When should you send New Year wishes to colleagues?
Send them in the last week of December or on the first working day of January. In 2027, 1 January is a Friday, so many offices return on Monday 4 January, and that morning works well for a team message. Clients who close for the holiday season are better reached by mid-December.
What is a good short New Year message for coworkers?
One or two lines with a thank-you and a wish, such as "Happy New Year! Thanks for being so easy to work with this year." If you know the person well, add one detail, like a project you finished together, and it stops sounding like a template.
Should a New Year message to employees mention bonuses or targets?
No. A New Year message is a thank-you, and money or targets turn it into an announcement that people will read for hidden meaning. If a bonus has been decided, announce it separately with the details. Next year's goals belong in the January kickoff, not in the greeting.
How do you wish clients a Happy New Year without sounding like marketing?
Write from a person, to a person, and mention one thing you did together this year. Leave out offers, catalog links and meeting requests. A two-line note with a real detail reads as a message, while a banner and a discount code read as a campaign, however warm the words are.
Can I use AI to write New Year wishes for my team?
Yes, especially for the first draft. In the Wish Generator chat a text greeting costs nothing: say who it is for, what happened this year and the tone you want, then ask for it shorter, more formal or in another language for colleagues abroad. If the draft misses the one real detail, add it yourself.
